Position Overview & Specifications

Research Assistant - Grade 5: £28,929 - £33,348 Research Associate - Grade 7: £35,308 - £43,155

An exciting opportunity has arisen for three new key analytical roles in the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU), Department of Public Health and Primary Care.

A key responsibility of these analytical roles will be to conduct and disseminate high quality, high priority, applied research using linked national hospital, primary care, mortality, COVID-19 test data, vaccination data and specialist audit and registry datasets across the four devolved nations. Specific examples of these analyses include quantifying associations between Covid-19 and multiple chronic diseases and developing risk prediction models.

The post-holders will contribute to the development and application of reproducible analysis pipelines using a range of statistical methods (eg, Poisson and Cox regression, missing data methods, inverse probability weights, meta-analysis, propensity scores) and the production of high-quality tables and figures for publication.

The post holders will work in close conjunction with the senior epidemiologists and analysts in the CEU, including: Professors Angela Wood, Professor Emanuele Di Angelantonio, Dr Stephen Kaptoge and Dr Lisa Pennells. You will also work closely with other members of the CEU and scientific collaborators based in other institutions.

The preferred candidates will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics, Epidemiology, Health Data Science or other related quantitative subject. They will have a strong understanding of inferential and quantitative concepts and a broad range of quantitative techniques, strong computational skills and experience of analysing large epidemiological datasets, ideally with electronic health records. They should have an ability to communicate and present results to other quantitative scientists, bio-informaticians, epidemiologists, clinicians and scientists, along with excellent verbal and written communications skills and strong organisational skills.

This position is available full-time or part time of no less than 50% FTE for the duration of 2 x 12 month positions and 1 x 9-month position.

We strongly value and encourage Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as well as a flexible working environment.

  • Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be, awarded appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded (PhD needs to be awarded within 6 months of the start date). If an individual has not submitted a PhD or is not working towards one they could be appointed as a Research Assistant if they have either a degree (and/or Master's) in a relevant area or equivalent experience.
