Position Overview & Specifications

This post represents an excellent opportunity for a medically qualified trainee with an interest in metabolism to join a multidisciplinary team of clinical and basic scientists investigating adipose tissue function/dysfunction (in the context of lipodystrophy and obesity) and its consequences, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The group undertakes detailed human metabolic studies in patients with severe insulin resistance due to lipodystrophy or other causes, and also uses both cellular and animal models (particularly mice) to understand the molecular consequences of nutritional overload.

The successful candidate will play a key role in undertaking human studies, including detailed analysis of energy balance/energy expenditure, insulin sensitivity, adipose and muscle tissue sampling/analysis, and MR imaging and spectroscopy. They will also be involved in cellular studies in the lab and possibly in related animal model work.

A knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the Human Tissue Act (HTA) is expected and experience with ethics applications would be very helpful.

The role holder will be responsible for running their own research projects and will work with a small group of post docs and PhD students who have overlapping expertise.

Responsibilities are likely to include: ¿ Setup, participant recruitment, and running of human investigative medicine studies (including handling of HTA material) ¿ Detailed human metabolic phenotyping ¿ Cell culture, cloning, transfection, site-directed mutagenesis ¿ Confocal imaging ¿ Big data analysis ¿ RNAseq etc
