Position Overview & Specifications

The role

This is an opening for a Research Associate in Geographic Data Science to work on an exciting new research project on ‘The spatial signatures of gambling behaviours: access to online vs. brick-and-mortar facilities’ led by Prof Emmanouil Tranos. This project is funded by and positioned within the Bristol Hub for Gambling Research. The successful candidate will utilise quantitative modelling and spatial analytics to understand the spatial signature of online gambling in the UK.

What will you be doing?

The successful post-holder will have a strong interest in applying geographic data science techniques to address real world issues. In collaboration with the project lead and with other members of the Bristol Hub for Gambling Research they will conduct empirical research utilising a diverse range of data: from survey to transaction and POI data. Experience with multilevel modelling will be particularly useful.

The post-holder will be responsible for leading, and contributing towards, the publication of results in academic journal articles. They will actively engage with a wide range of project collaborators and partners to develop and disseminate the project findings. Successful applicants will have the flexibility, with the support of the project PI, to develop their own research interests around the project theme.

You should apply if

We are interested in applicants with a PhD (awarded or expected) and research experience in quantitative human geography, geographic data science or a related field. The successful candidate will have experience with statistical modelling (e.g. multilevel modelling) and ability to research and learn new methods appropriate for the analysis of a range of social and spatial datasets. They will be confident working with a range of spatial data types (e.g. traditional and non-traditional datasets) and have a strong interest in applying quantitative spatial methods to understand and address real world

issues. They will have programming skills in R or Python. Domain knowledge on gambling behaviours is welcome, but not necessary.

We are interested in hearing from a diverse range of applicants. Flexibility in terms of living arrangements and working patterns will be accommodated wherever possible.
