About the role

The Departmental Manager (DM) will manage the operational infrastructure of the department to support teaching, research, administration, and other departmental activities through assuming responsibility for general and specific duties to progress the work of the Department and the wider institution.The appointee will manage and develop department-wide resources, including staff, finances, health and safety, security, IT, estates and administration, will ensure systems and processes are fit for purpose, and that UCL, Faculty and Departmental policies and strategies are fully implemented at all times.The appointee will advise and assist the Head of Department in identifying short-, medium- and long-term strategic objectives and priorities, providing relevant background data as appropriate to support decision making processes.Other duties include: - To work with senior colleagues to determine and implement strategy and policy to meet the aims and objectives of the Department, Faculty and UCL. - To review regularly the departmental operational structure with a view to ensuring an efficient and effective service, and to manage changes to that structure. - To develop, agree and maintain an appropriate Department professional staffing structure. - To manage the operational support team for the Department and to ensure the successful delivery of all support services. - To set budgets, monitor in-year expenditure and communicate positions within the Department to ensure that annual financial performance targets are met. - To liaise with funding bodies, sponsors, suppliers and UCL service providers to ensure maximisation of the Department’s funds. - To ensure the provision of effective undergraduate and postgraduate teaching support within the Department. - To ensure the provision of effective support for external funding applications and administration of research awards, coordinating with Research Services on contract administration, including pricing and other complex contract issues. About you

The successful candidate will have: - Substantial relevant experience or educated to degree level or have equivalent qualifications. - A proven track record in administration and management within a HE or large, complex organisations. - Experience of effectively line managing and developing teams and individuals, including leading and embracing change. - The ability to successfully lead and motivate teams and individual members of staff. - An understanding the value of equality, diversity and inclusivity initiatives. - The ability to effectively organise and prioritise a varied and demanding workload, using methodical approaches and paying close attention to detail.
