Position Overview & Specifications

Location: Hybrid (with regular travel required to our Exeter office)

Term: Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week)

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000 per annum, plus generous company benefits

Are you a talented, creative, UI/UX Designer who shares our passion for improving the future of education?


Are you keen to help students, teachers, and parents by designing engaging, intuitive and impactful products which transform the quality of learning in schools?


We are looking for someone to join our UI/UX team, to help us on our mission to improve life opportunities of 5 million children by 2030.


In this incredibly varied role, you will go from conducting user research and running user testing sessions, to working closely with our leaders to create engaging experiences. Your work will help to inform and shape our products to support teachers and inspire learners.


What you will be doing:

  • Delivering high quality UI/UX product designs, as a key member of the multidisciplinary Sparx UI/UX team
  • Designing and conducting user research sessions with teachers, heads of department, parents and students to help understand user needs, behaviour and motivations
  • Designing great looking, responsive, intuitive and well-functioning web interfaces based on your research, best practice and experience
  • Validating your designs using data and usability testing, rapidly iterating based on feedback and learnings
  • Supporting the development of impactful products for our teachers and students, working with Agile scrum teams
  • Supporting the development of highly engaging websites, in collaboration with Marketing, Senior Leadership and others
  • Adapting to changing priorities, pitching in to help where needed


You will have:


  • A strong portfolio demonstrating excellent UI and UX design skills
  • Experience creating wireframes, storyboards, prototypes and user flows
  • Experience with user interface and interaction design
  • Demonstrable experience designing, conducting and analysing user research, using findings to meet user needs
  • Strong visual design skills with the ability to deliver great looking and engaging designs
  • Strong understanding of UI patterns, web accessibility and design standards
  • Keen to share opinions, question approaches and listen to the user research
  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Understanding of UCD and Design Thinking
  • Demonstrable skills in visual hierarchy, colour theory and typography

These are great to have, but we’ll develop and teach you along the way:

  • A relevant degree or equivalent commercial experience
  • Experience using usage analytics to identify issues and review solution effectiveness
  • Design experience in the Education sector
  • Experience using A/B or Multivariate testing
  • Experience working with brand identities
