Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

Siemens IES division develops CAPITAL, a software suite used globally by automotive and aerospace manufacturers and wire harness suppliers to enhance their electrical distribution system (EDS) design and manufacturing flows.

What we’re looking for

We have 11-month internship programs available for IT and Computer Science undergraduates. The successful candidates will be fully integrated into our existing teams where they will use and improve their skills and knowledge on key software engineering and QA projects.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Software Development Manager you will be working in a small, Agile development team focusing on providing real-time, immersive technology solutions with high-quality visualisation.

It is expected that the candidate will acquire a broad understanding of our products, their domains, and their application; have the confidence to express ideas as part of a creative software team; have a genuine interest in technological trends; have the ability to meet deadlines; to think creatively about solutions to complex technical problems; and be constantly striving to enhance the team’s results and the quality of the software.

CAPITAL has a large codebase and development environment primarily based on the Java platform. Students gain useful exposure to the following during their placement:

• Modern Java development in a highly experienced team
• Agile practices in a focused team using Scrum or Kanban
• Computer Aided Design and Engineering
• Relational Database (Oracle, Postgres)
• Object Oriented Design and Development
• Windows and UNIX operating systems
• Web-services and APIs for customer-specific integration and customisation
• Highly interactive Web and tablet clients
• Automated regression testing and a high level of attention to quality
• Version control using Git
• Continuous integration using Jenkins

Interpersonal skills are very important as the students will report regularly to management and will develop a good working relationship with team members based at other Siemens sites in UK, US and India. The internships are located at our office in Altrincham.
