Job Description:

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner is currently seeking applications for a Senior Investigator to join her team who are based in Hamilton. The successful candidate will support the Commissioner and Head of Investigations, alongside fellow Senior Investigators, in leading and directing teams who are carrying out effective and efficient investigations into serious matters involving the police in Scotland. These can include investigations into deaths in police custody or criminal allegations against the police. You may be required to work unsocial and extended hours, on occasion.

Salary: £52,355 - £65,276 – C1 - STAFF WILL BE APPOINTED ON POINT 1 OF SCALE- £52,355

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Lead and direct investigations in accordance with relevant legislation and associated Regulations.
  • Lead, direct and develop teams who are conducting investigations in accordance with legislative requirements, agreed operating procedures, protocols and guidelines.
  • Ensure the efficient and effective management of resources allocated across the Investigations Department.
  • Prepare accurate and timely reports as directed, on any matter concerning PIRC investigations and its activities.
  • Take witness statements, conduct interviews and prepare reports for the Commissioner and for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service as required.
  • Be prepared to work unsocial and extended hours.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Ensure that all correspondence, including enquiries and/or other processes, are allocated effectively and thereafter concluded within set time frames, having attained the highest possible standard.
  • Form part of the PIRC Investigations senior management team and actively engage in strategic planning and policy implementation.
  • Lead on complex internal projects as required.

Essential

  • Good general education – minimum of two SCQF qualifications or equivalent relevant professional qualification / experience with evidence of continuous professional development
  • 5-7 years proven experience of managing investigations into complex cases which are often challenging and high profile
  • Proven experience in interpreting legislation relevant to post
  • Proven experience in evidence collection, analysis and presentation
  • A minimum of 3 years proven team management experience with the ability to build an effective team environment
  • Proven experience of working with internal and external parties to complete tasks successfully
  • Well-developed critical thinking skills, a capacity to conduct enquiries, obtain information and to use sound judgement to reach conclusions
  • Ability to communicate fluently, clearly, concisely and persuasively, both orally and in writing
  • Proven influencing skills
  • Extensive evidence of planning skills and ability to balance priorities across a team
  • Proven ability to show initiative and lead in a changing environment
  • Excellent analytical skills, sound judgement in decision-making and self-confidence
  • Full driving licence
