Position Overview & Specifications

Are you proficient in 3D CAD modelling using Inventor, Solidworks, AutoCAD or similar programs? Do you enjoy working on projects in a varied, creative environment? Can you transform a design concept into a set of construction drawings? Is your knowledge of construction materials, their properties and uses up to date? Can you work as part of a small team and deliver to tight and sometimes changing deadlines?

We are looking for an experienced Draughtsperson to join our Drawing Office at our Scenic Workshops in Stratford-upon-Avon. This role requires you to produce 3D CAD models and construction drawings for RSC scenery, to share with departments across the RSC, including creatives and production teams.

Reporting to the Head of Production, you will work broadly across the RSC in a collaborative environment, where some of your duties will include:

  • Applying the highest drafting standards and methods of construction using Inventor
  • Working to assigned and sometimes tight deadlines
  • Working with Heads of Departments, Production Managers, Designers and others to determine the scenic and installation requirements for assigned productions
  • Producing ground plans and sections using Inventor, schemes and costing drawings, construction drawings for wood and metal-based structures
  • Monitoring the construction of scenery in the RSC workshops
  • Working within agreed budget limitations
  • Participating in pre-production meetings with Workshop Heads of Department to ensure that Supervisors and Production Managers are briefed on on-site construction techniques and that method statements and risk assessments are completed for items of scenery
  • Producing pre-visualisations of sets to check the experience of our audience members
  • Ensuring that workshops are supported through the provision of designs compatible with their manufacturing processes (water jet cutting, sheet metal folding, 3D printing)

This is an exciting job where no two projects are the same, you will be working in a multi-disciplinary and creative environment, where you will see your work transform and come to life on our stages.

To be suitable for this role, you must:

  • Be proficient using Inventor, 3D AutoCAD or a similar program to produce 3D models and 2D construction drawings for scenic construction
  • Have previous experience of working in a scenic drawing office or a similar technical design environment
  • Be comfortable communicating clearly at all levels, together with working in a sometimes-high pressure environment and to tight deadlines with last-minute changes!
  • Be a pro-active and adaptable team player, with a flexible approach to work and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
  • Have either worked in a theatre, TV or film environment or perhaps in an architectural practice, or you might just be super creative and brilliant using Inventor or AutoCAD, with an interest in theatre!

We use Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Vault as part of our daily work. If you don't have direct experience of these programs but can demonstrate a good understanding of 3D CAD, and a proven ability to learn, we are happy to train the right applicant in this software.

This is a full-time, permanent role, where you will be working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday with occasional weekend and evening work.

First interviews are likely to be held online and the second stage will be in person and will include a CAD test.

All applications should be made online using the RSC website. If you need any assistance when applying, please email jobs@rsc.org.uk
