Job Description

Veterinary Laboratory Technician

Rainbow Equine Hospital

Full Time (Tue-Sat)

Malton, North Yorkshire

This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to join an expanding team of laboratory technicians. Rainbow Equine Hospital is the leading equine hospital in the North East and provides veterinary laboratory facilities to local horse owners and trainers as well as veterinary practices across the country.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be required to work as part of a team of 5 technicians to carry out a range of laboratory services including microbiology, haematology, cytology, biochemistry, endocrinology, serology, PCR and faecal analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for receipt, processing and data entry of samples and results from all laboratory submissions with minimal supervision but appropriate support. The position will at times be customer-facing and the appropriate skills to deal with veterinary professionals and the general public will be required. The successful candidate will be expected to take responsibility for the operation, quality assurance and maintenance of all laboratory equipment.

Required Skills and Attributes

Previous laboratory experience is required whether this is from a commercial or research laboratory or appropriate undergraduate training. Applications from recent science graduates with an interest in clinical pathology would be welcomed. The candidate should have:

  • Attention to detail and exacting professional standards
  • The ability to multi-task and manage multiple analyses concurrently
  • A helpful and “can-do” attitude
  • A willingness to work flexibly (including Saturdays) and to accommodate the needs of a developing and changing service
  • The ability to work in an organised and disciplined manner without supervision
  • A desire to integrate within a close and friendly laboratory and hospital team
  • The capacity to work within a potentially frenetic and stressful environment
  • Computer literacy
