About the role

JOB TITLE: Assistant Parks and Woodland Ranger

RESPONSIBLE TO: Woodland Manager

NNC is proud to be hosting this one year post through the Royal Forestry Society’s Forestry Roots 2023 Scheme. ALA Green Charitable Trust is providing financial support to enable a number of students to pursue their career aspirations in this field. We are therefore seeking enthusiastic individuals to provide a positive and welcoming NNC presence as an Assistant Parks and Woodland Ranger across our parks and woodland in Corby. The ideal individual will have excellent communication skills and be prepared to work in an outdoor environment all year round. Duties may involve cleaning the toilet facilities, litter picking, conservation work and liaising with the general public.

This is an ideal opportunity for an individual wishing to develop their skills and improve and conserve our parks and woodlands.

NOTES
  • Some weekend and evening work to be undertaken.
  • 1 year placement usually running from September to August.
  • Includes a budget of £2000 for training.
  • 20 days leave to attend training.
  • The position is also only open to applicants under the age of 30 and who are not currently employed in forestry or arboriculture.

What will you be doing?

This post is instrumental in ensuring the Corby woodlands, parks and open spaces under the auspice of North Northamptonshire Council are inspected and maintained to a high standard on an agreed basis.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with inspection of the Corby woodlands, parks and open spaces on an agreed schedule and ensure all the necessary inspection documentation is maintained.
  • Take the necessary action to isolate and report where necessary any dead, dying or dangerous trees
  • Remove litter/glass where practicable, if area is heavily littered, report to environmental services.
  • To support voluntary and statutory groups to develop in the long term the enhancement of the parks, play areas and open spaces.
  • To assist with the planning and delivery of special/community events.
  • To assist the Woodland Manager on the operational delivery of the Management Plans in Hazel and Thoroughsale, East Carlton Countryside Park and King’s Wood LNR and support the co-ordination of volunteer activities
  • To assist with volunteer groups on a number of operational duties including litter picking, coppicing, path maintenance and other maintenance operations.
  • To assist with ensuring all tools and equipment, including first aid kits are used correctly, stored safely and records maintained.
  • To assist with ensuring safety and security of members of the public and volunteers using and working within the parks, woodlands and open spaces
  • To assist the ranger team with supporting the Woodland Social Enterprise Scheme in becoming a sustainable venture
