Position Overview & Specifications

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

University Hospitals, Crosshouse and Ayr are large district general hospitals based in Ayrshire, central Scotland. Crosshouse is situated 35 minutes south of Glasgow and Ayr a further 19 miles South. The total catchment population is around 375,000. We wish to appoint Clinical Development Fellows within the department of medicine at both hospital sites. The posts will commence in 2 August 2023.

Applications are invited from doctors for the position of CDF and CTF in Medicine in NHS Ayrshire and Arran who, by 2 August 2023, will have successfully completed Foundation Year 2 training. This post would also be suitable for those candidates who have completed the UK Internal Medicine or Core Medical Training Programme or its equivalent and are looking to apply for Higher Specialist Training.

Within this post there will be a choice of Clinical Development Fellow or Clinical Teaching. You should also state your location preferences between University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr.

The aim of this post is to provide development opportunities for the post-holders, while supporting our key service areas in relation to the provision of clinical care by a trained doctor workforce. The post will provide experience in the management of acutely unwell medical patients and development of procedural skills. The posts, although not recognised for training, are structured to allow post-holders the opportunity to further develop their medical career.

There will be regular opportunities to perform and develop procedural skills. Participation in our departmental quality improvement, audit and research work will also be encouraged, thus further strengthening your CV. The post will provide excellent experience for those wishing to apply to any of the medical specialties.

The Clinical Teaching Fellow will focus on the organisation, development and provision of teaching to undergraduate medical students from Glasgow University. The successful candidates will spend approximately 8-12 hours per week on a mixture of bedside teaching and facilitated tutorials. Pursuit of a qualification in medical education is encouraged and fully funded.

Within the constraints of service requirements, we will tailor the job to suit your requirements. It is likely that the post will be rotational through two or three medical specialties.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to make contact with: Dr Derek McLaughlan, Asst Director of Medical Education (Tel 01292 6214766) or Email: derek.mclaughlan@aapct.scot.nhs.uk , Dr David Wilkin (Assistant Director of Medical Education at Crosshouse) , Dr Claire Gilroy, Lead for Doctor to Doctor Recruitment (Claire.gilroy4@aapct.scot.nhs.uk).

Please note that these posts do not carry educational approval with the Dean.
