Department of Laboratory Medicine, Blood Sciences, NHS Lothian
Blood Science (Band 5/5U) Biomedical Scientist
Blood Sciences – SJH as initial base

This is an opportunity for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with and interest in Blood Sciences NHS Lothian team of Biomedical Scientists.

Candidates with HCPC registration and some laboratory experience at Biomedical Scientist will be considered for the Band 5 post

Candidates without HCPC registration but have the underpinning knowledge and qualifications and are willing to undertake the IBMS Competency Portfolio (supported by the Department) will be considered Agenda for Change Annexe 21.

There are 3 adult acute hospitals and a specialist Paediatric hospital within NHS Lothian. Blood Science Laboratory Services are provided from Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Western General Hospital and St John’s Livingston. Each site has their own specialisms and successful candidates will have an opportunity to work in these areas. Specialisms include for Biochemistry: Proteins, Inherited Metabolic Diseases, Specialist Antenatal Service, GI, Toxicology, Paediatrics. For Haematology Haemoglobinopathy service, Specialist Coagulation, Oncology, Neonates and Paediatrics. There is also the opportunity to work in the Microbial Serology section.

Our ideal candidate will have some experience working in a Laboratory Medicine Laboratory in a Blood Sciences Department. After suitable training the successful candidate will be required, after competency review, to undertake 24/7 duties in the Blood Science laboratories with the flexibility to potentially cover cross site. Working hours are 37.5 per week average including evenings, weekends and overnight working when suitably trained.

This post requires the post holder to have a PVG Scheme membership/ record. If the post holder is not a current PVG member for the required regulatory group (i.e. child and/or adult) then an application will need to be made to Disclosure Scotland and deemed satisfactory before they can begin in post.
