Position Overview & Specifications

As a porter, you play such an invaluable role supporting the day to day running of our hospital.

It’s not just the transporting patients between different wards and departments, in fact there's nothing much that the portering department doesn't deal with. As well as patient transfers you will be dealing with a wide range of tasks and duties varying from sample collection, the transportation of linen, removal of domestic and clinical waste and driving, just to name a few.

Don't just take our word for it - hear from Jake about his role: https://vimeo.com/691336414/9cc55430cf

Primarily patient & waste movement & distribution and collection of stores, gas, post, specimens, linen, blood, pharmacy, equipment & furniture.

Sometimes the role will be tough, you will see and be involved in some difficult things involving our patients, be rushed off your feet. We don’t want to shy away from that and we do know that this part of the role isn’t for everyone.

No task is ever the same and the department is forever changing be it new tasks, new ways of working, new equipment and new staff.

Working for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals can be very challenging but comes with a real sense of job satisfaction.

We are not going to say that this is an easy job; it’s busy, lively, active, bustling, and hectic. But at the same time this job is extremely, satisfying, fulfilling, gratifying and stimulating. We are a 24/7, 365 days a year service, completing up to 15,000 tasks a month.

As well as transferring patients throughout the site, in your very familiar and recognisable Porters uniform, you will deliver laundry, internal mail, collect clinical/domestic waste, you will attend fire and security alerts, as well we also respond to cardiac arrests…in fact, there is no part of the hospital you won’t support.

You will be a fantastic team worker, who has experience of working with colleagues in a busy environment and also has basic computer skills. The world has gone digital, so these skills are becoming more and more important.

There isn’t another role like this around – so it goes without saying that full training will be given which will include all aspects of Portering duties - we know you will proudly wear the uniform provided and join a team of over 150 colleagues from all backgrounds who work together to keep the hospital ticking smoothly.
