Job description
If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment and addressing issues of national importance. We’re based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries, and conservation.

Permitting Officer is one of the most important roles at the EA. You’ll assess applications for a range of environmental permitted activities across the country. Environmental Permits set out the responsibilities and limitations on the activities we regulate. You’ll perform technical assessments according to EA processes and regulatory obligations, to protect the environment and local communities. As part of the role, you will get involved in developing and coaching other permitting officers.

You’ll join our dedicated National Permitting Service, assessing applications for environmental permits and licenses. Working with a team of permitting officers, you’ll assess a caseload of applications, work on environmental permitting legislation and make decisions on applications.
It's highly varied, challenging work that plays a key role in creating a cleaner, greener, safer environment. You’ll develop relationships with a range of partners and support key functions including flooding and environmental response.
The team
The Permitting Teams’ primary role is to protect the environment and support sustainable economic growth through assessing and issuing applications for environmental permits/licences.

You will work within a team of friendly and capable Permitting Officers at one of our national offices with the option to work flexibly.

You will work in one of our permitting regimes: Waste, Water Quality or Water Resources or Mobile Plant.
Experience/skills required
Experience of environmental permitting isn’t essential; What's most important are the key transferrable skills, relevant professional qualities. You'll have some experience or interest in the environment and regulation. We’re looking for candidates with a genuine passion for the environment, who are keen to protect it by regulating damaging activities. You will need to demonstrate that you are able to:

  • Make and justify informed, timely decisions based on scrutiny of complex technical data.
  • Coach and support others through technical challenges.
  • Manage your own time and workload and meet performance targets related to you and your team.
  • Communicate effectively and build sound relationships with your customers.
  • Work with data, manage information, and utilize Microsoft office applications and specialist digital tools relevant to your job.
Contact and additional information
As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve, to achieve this we welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation, and religion. We also welcome applications for part-time hours.

What’s more, you’ll have access to our great benefits package, including generous annual leave, paid membership of an institute, an excellent pension, flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to be part of a variety of staff networks. We offer extensive training to develop your career.
