Position Overview & Specifications

Youth Justice Family Support Worker (Well-being) x 3 posts to be located at either Mercian Close, Ilkeston, Peter Webster Centre, Chesterfield or the Area Education Office in Buxton – hybrid working

The Ministry of Justice is providing funding to support Local Authorities to intervene early with children for the next two financial years through the Turnaround Programme. This additional funding will enable Youth Justice Services to consistently support a cohort of children not currently on their statutory caseload, and work with up to 17,000 more children in England and Wales.

The Aims of Turnaround

  • achieve positive outcomes for children with the ultimate aim of preventing them going on to offend
  • build on work already undertaken to ensure all children on the cusp of the youth justice system are consistently offered a needs assessment and the opportunity for support
  • improve the socio-emotional, mental health and wellbeing of children; and
  • improve the integration and partnership working between YJSs and other statutory services to support children.

The funding will be used to deliver evidence-based interventions, building upon current service delivery, and developing new approaches, where required. We will have the freedom to design a programme of interventions that are most suited to the needs of the child.

The postholders will be in one of the three Youth Justice Teams with bases in Ilkeston, Chesterfield (possibly Buxton). The area teams are:-

  • Erewash, South Derbyshire and South Dales
  • Amber Valley, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire
  • Chesterfield, High Peak and North Dales

What will I be doing?

Work collaboratively with other agencies, particularly the Safe Neighbourhood Team and ASB Co-Ordinators for each area and the specialist workers with the YJS to:

  • Enable children to manage their emotional and mental health
  • Enable children to experience improvements in their relationships, including personal, family, peer and community relationships
  • Enable children to have fun and achieve
  • Empower children to be their own person, developing a pro social identity to enable them to make a positive contribution to society
  • Enable children have a sense of purpose, recognise their uniqueness and feel valued.
  • Complete holistic assessments and intervention plans

What skills and experience do you need to have:

The successful candidate will be expected to work with minimal supervision and possess skills to enable relationship building with children and young people to facilitate and maximise the opportunities for their personal, social and educational development. The successful candidate should also be able to demonstrate administration and IT skills and have a flexible approach to work. Good communication skills and the ability to work to deadlines are essential.

The job may require unsocial hours working including weekends and Bank Holidays. Payment arrangements will be detailed in any contract offer made.

Saturday and Sunday hours will be paid at plain time where it is part of your normal working pattern unless it is between 7pm and 7am, where enhanced rates of pay apply. Enhanced pay rates are paid for Bank Holiday working.
